Mellow Yellow

This month's color for the Rainbow Scrap challenge is YELLOWI had my doubts as to whether yellow and white would have enough contrast for the Birds In The Air blocks that I am making for the challenge. So, first order of business was to separate the lights from the not-so-lights:

Still doubtful, I sewed up the units that make up the "birds":

When I got them all put together, I was satisfied that the pattern would stand out and so I continued by adding the larger triangle parts, (the "nests" 😉)

Of course, even cutting into the scraps creates scraps:

So another crumb block was created:

To be honest, I don't know which is more fun, creating the Birds in the Air blocks or the crumb blocks.  I expect I know what the Bird blocks will look like, but the crumb blocks are always a surprise.

It feels good to be creating 2 quilts for the price of one, but that's nothing compared to some of the other quilters who make blocks for multiple quilts each month based the chosen color.

Head on over to the Rainbow Scrap Challenge linky party to see a burst of sunny yellow projects that are being worked on.

    1. This is my first year doing the Rainbow Scrap Challenge and it is a great motivator. I already have some scraps put aside for when we get to "green" and "blue".

    1. Thank you, Katie! My original plan only called for 2 yellow Birds in the Air blocks, but I couldn't help but make a few more while I was at it.

    1. Thanks! I was actually surprised at how much yellow I have. I only use it sparingly.

  7. I remember Donavan singing that song, Mellow Yellow, do you? Perhaps you are not as old as I am! Anyway, I adore these yellows and your two for one stitching. I read your recent posts. We are jigsaw puzzle people too but have never ever tackled more than 1000 pieces. It has given me food for thought.

    1. Oh Gosh! I surely do remember that song! The jigsaw puzzle thing is a new one around here. I never knew my husband liked to do them. If we hadn't gotten the 3000 piece puzzle as a gift, I never would have tackled it either. Thanks for your comment.

  8. Pretty birds in the air blocks (reminds me I have a slew of them waiting to be sewn together) and the crumbs - so pretty.

    1. They really are a fun block, and the way that Eleanor Burns makes them two at a time is really neat. Thanks for your comment. Hope you get your "birds" flying again soon. :-)

    1. Absolutely! If I recall, that is why Angela chose that color for this month. Can't wait to see what color is next!

    1. Scraps! What would we do without them? Now I just have to figure out what to do with the crumb blocks! :-)
      Thanks for you comment

  11. When I first saw your 'birds', I was puzzled by how squashed the block looked. Then it dawned on me what you were doing! Excellent! I love it when patterns minimize working with bias edges.
Good luck with your crumb blocks! Star centers, maybe?

    1. In my first Rainbow Scrap Challenge post back in January I showed how the blocks are constructed. https://quiltcrossing.blogspot.com/2019/01/rainbow-scrap-challenge.html
I've always been impressed with the way the "Quilt in a Day" folks come up with time saving techniques

  12. The yellows look great with your background. Crumb blocks are always fun to make. I love the "anything goes" sentiment. It looks like you're making good progress with both quilts!

    1. Thanks, Rosemary! I think I might end up with enough "Birds in the Air" blocks for 2 kids quilts by the time the year is through.
